What Contractors Need to Know About Adoptable Pipework

Adoptable drainage is a required part of many developments, but specifying the right pipework isn’t always straightforward. Contractors and developers often face delays, high costs, or even supply chain bottlenecks when sourcing drainage products. Understanding what water boards look for, selecting pipework that can handle frequent maintenance, and working with suppliers who can guarantee stock availability helps avoid setbacks.
Why Specifying the Right Adoptable Pipework Matters
Unlike private drainage, adoptable systems are taken over by the local water board and must withstand years of high-pressure jetting, blockages and heavy loads depending on their location. Choosing the wrong pipe can lead to rejection by water companies, which is why many contractors stick to the approved list despite the higher costs.
UK water boards adhere to industry standards such as WIS 4-35-01 (Metro Sewer) and EN 13476-3, which set out the requirements for compliance. However, not all approved products offer the same long-term durability. Contractors should consider more than just approval status when selecting pipework.
Water Board Approvals on Adoptable Pipework
Each water company has its own specifications for adoptable drainage, with UK water boards (Thames Water, Severn Trent, United Utilities, Yorkshire Water, and Scottish Water) all setting different requirements that may change periodically.
New products must demonstrate performance before being widely accepted, even if they meet regulations. For this reason, contractors shouldn’t rely solely on official lists. In many cases, if a pipe meets functional and durability requirements, it is likely to be accepted.
Working with a supplier who stays up to date on approvals and product trials can help contractors avoid outdated information and make more informed choices.
The Supply Issue: Why Stock Availability Matters
Some adoptable pipe manufacturers will only sell to large national merchants, which results in longer lead times. When drainage products are needed on-site, waiting 4-6 weeks for delivery isn’t always an option. It’s not uncommon for site areas to open up at short notice, causing delays in securing materials, wasted labour costs, or the need for workarounds that disrupt planned workflows.
New Product: Twinwall Adoptable Pipes
To help address delays in adoptable pipework supply and recognising a gap in the market, Naylors, the UK manufacturer, has recently developed a durable twinwall adoptable pipe designed to meet the demands of both surface water and foul water drainage installations. While Naylors is currently seeking full approval from all UK water boards, the pipe is already being accepted on project work as it meets all regulatory requirements.
These pipes offer enhanced resistance to jetting, heavy loads and the long-term maintenance challenges that contractors face on-site. Many existing twinwall options on the market have a ring stiffness (SN) rating of SN4 or SN6, but Naylors’ new pipe offers an SN8 rating, making it a stronger product. Better yet, independent suppliers like Plastech®, are now able to offer these durable pipes.
